How do I become an rj?-RADIO JOCKEY or RJ

RADIO JOCKEY or RJRJ or Radio Jockey has been with us for almost a century, but since the advent of FM channels the Radio Announcer suddenly being referred as Radio Jockey or RJ. These days a RJ not only plays a part of the navigator but his/her main aim is to entertain the listeners and simultaneously provide regular online information. Every successful RJ has its own style of communicating. A sweet, mid to heavy voice is considered suitable for broadcasting but moreover its your own aptitude, your overall confidence, your personality to deliver all of it through your voice. Although Radio Jockeys are required for all channels of Radio, but a Radio Jockey is usually related to FM. But why FM ?. FM channel broadcasts in stereo and has very good sound quality as compared to other short, medium wave channels. FM channels are relatively new medium and has gone through lot of changes since its formation. The style, expression, delivery, and content too has developed. FM Radio is a fast progressing industry with more and more channels opening up in every city of the world. What does an RJ has to do everyday First of all, an RJ does not have a regular 9 to 5 job. He can be called to host or anchor a show anytime of the day or night. An RJ has to be very open to himself. Whatever may be your emotions an RJ is always happy. He should be culturally active. He/She should know his/her city well, the culture and be aware of main events taking place. You should know of the language or further some dialects of other languages also, to punch in whenever necessary. Since Radio cannot survive without Movies, Songs or Bollywood in terms of India, so awareness about them is considered a necessity. An RJ should also be able to write scripts for a show. One thing more if you have written your script yourself, you know of the subject matter and can change or manipulate at your own will.
An RJ has also to anchor Live shows. If speaking is your passion, talking to people comes naturally to you, fun never ends. Your every word is Live. You react to every song or item played. Everything is spontaneous but very relevant and entertaining. In short you may have the following qualities- You enjoy talking to people and have a desire to be aware. You must be original and should have your own style. Your other voice performance or qualities like mimicry, local dialects and comedy or humour items helps to carry on the show. You can't afford to have inhibitions. You should know how to provide variations and modulation in your voice. You should be fluent but not monotonous as this may create boredom in your audience monotone is a surefire way of losing your audience. Modulate your voice well and your fan following will increase and open the way to other assignments. If you can sound different on your show, people will enjoy listening to you. Humans have a tendency to make mistake, if somehow a mistake has been made, either admit it or cover it up diplomatically. This may come up with experience or better listen to experienced RJs how they tackle these issues. Their professionalism, their relationship with listeners, the flow they are speaking, their interactiveness and so on. Also note how they interact live with listeners, how do they tackle some awkward queries or comments from callers. You should be ready to face that and cover up in your style quickly by changing the topic or by taking a break or playing a song. Mostly the telephone callers are briefed before for a minute or so before they come on live, this gets you an idea of the caller. Another thing an RJ is familiarity with the sound equipment and computers. An RJ has to deal with sound mixers, faders, CD players, Call equipment, Computer for his songs and Ads database and microphones & headphones. An RJ has to be with them in his studio, so one has to be computer savvy or have a desire to learn more on that. He should be able to know, if a goof up happens or should switch over to alternate equipment quickly. Never the less there are technical support to help you.
Is formal training required to become an RJ? No. Anchoring or Radio Jockeying depends on how you deliver, your originality, the punch in your content, your style, your personality, how you present your programme and further how you connect with your audience. An RJ should have good communication powers and language skills. Never the less, RJ courses do help to develop your confidence or bring out your personality or inbuilt caliber in hiding but are not a necessity Many of the RJ's today have never gone through any course and have a good name today. RJ hunts or talent search are often conducted by FM channels to bring out original unique talent. Gains There is a lot of scope for quick growth. All you need is talent, confidence and perseverance. As a radio jockey, besides getting contractual good money you earn by doing Ad commercials. As you get famous and your voice is recognized, other Radio Channels tend to attract you with better package. Alternatively RJs are also busy with doing voice-overs for ad films and movies. When they are being connected to their audience RJs also can anchor or compere TV shows or live shows / events. Read other articles on how to improve your voice and hope your journey in this voicing arena continues for long with success.Eligibility: The job of Radio Jockey is of diversifying nature depending on the subject matter of the programme. However, some basic qualifications are needed to enter the field. A person needs to be at least graduates. He should not be more than 35 years of age. However, there are some private radio stations which do take plus-two qualified persons. The person should have a good voice, diction, flare and fluency. Pronunciation must be accurate. For this one can practise various typical words of their respective languages. As such command over the languages is not required, however one must have flow in the language. One should also have presence of mind, have fairly goodgeneral awareness and be willing to learn and grasp rules of the entertainment industry. Unlike in other service jobs where eye contact is vital, in Radio Jockeying it is the voice contact that is most essential.
A good command over language A good diction Extremely good communicative powers Proper voice modulation A good sense of sound and music A good sense of humor.Courses: Since the field is upcoming, not much training institutions have come up. Though there are number of universities and institutes that offer courses in communication and broadcasting, there are hardly any specialised courses in Radio Jockeing field. The courses offered by these institutes vary from two-month certificate course to one-year postgraduate programme. Besides, there are a host of crash courses in voiceovers or mixing run by professional in the field. Scope in India: The booming business of radio industry has just commenced. The domain which was previously dominated by the sate owned AIR is seeing huge investment by private concerns. This factor has gone on to increase job opportunities for radio jockeys. A beginner in this field can earn something between Rs.7,000 and Rs.15,000 per month. Some channels pay on the basis of the number of programs conducted. For beginners, the pay is low and it ranges between Rs.200-Rs.250, but once you have made your mark, the sky is the only limit for you.Scope Abroad: The government has allowed 20% Foreign Direct Investment in the broadcast media. This has cleared the road for big foreign players of the media business. Consequently, opportunities for Radio Jockeys abroad has increased. But, a good grip over the foreign language and an understanding of accents are very important if you aim to be a RJ outside India.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR VOICE

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR VOICE
Voice is God Gifted, yes it true and fact, but it can be trained, this also a fact. Nobody is a born singer or narrator or voice artiste, yes he/she may have a sweet, melodious voice by birth but still his/her voice needs to be trained enough to modulate, variate and able to perform professionally for required time. I am here to tell you about tips on how to improve your voice ( for voicing, dubbing, mimicry) so that you are able to have more base, uncharred, rhythmatic voice and have some control over your throat to produce variation and modulation in your voice as and when necessary. What ever you want to become in voicing arena, be it voice over artiste, dunning artist, mimicry artiste, performing actor, you need to modulate your voice according to the mood of the script. This is the first requirement of being a professional voice artiste. Anyway, lets begin with the training.1. Like what a singer does every morning called "Riyaaz" you should also do the same every morning. You can take "Sa" only of Sa Re Ga Ma and then take a deep breath and start reciting "Sa" with your full base voice till your breath ends. Keep in mind you have to inhale fully and should go on saying "Sa" till the end of your breath in a continuous pitch without any breaks, variation or modulation of your voice. This will not only help you in having good base voice but also increase your voicing stamina.2. If Main/Lead Voice Over is your target, you should everyday practice atleast two scripts with proper diction, pronunciation, modulation (as & when). If you do not have the stamina you may lose your voice in a lengthy script, that is your voice may be bold, enthusiastic, fresh in the first quarter of the script and may get tired or becomes low in the end. This is called the stamina of Voice, to remain one till the end specially in the case of background lead voice overs or narrators for documentaries or audio visuals. Similarly for other voicing fields, mimicry, stand up comedy, cartoon dubbings, simple dubbings etc. Record your voice everyday and listen. Everyday you will notice some improvement.3. Yoga plays a very important role in keeping your throat & voice healthy. Everyday chanting of "OM" for 10 minutes will give similar positive results as mentioned in point number one. You can also perform other Asanas for throat as "Singasana" and "Bharamri Pranayam" which will clear your throat and keep you away from all problems.4. One more Yog asana which is the most effective is 'Ujjhayani Pranayam' where full throat is contracted inside, and a sound is produced in reverse, that is you are producing sound by inhaling in through nose but throat is fully contracted and lips closed. When you breathe in fully, after that you release your throat muscles and release the breath through the left nostril, by holding the right nostril with your right thumb. A very effective way to exercise your tonsils.5. To have a good feel of your voice and make it more fluent, one of a prestigious voice artiste once told me his secret which I am sharing with you, to speak 'om' or simple 'Aaaah' in an earthen pot or a 'mutka'. You can also practice your scripts like this before appearing for an audition or final recordings. 6. Stay away from very cold things, beverages, aerated waters,

How to be a great RJ

The radio industry is set to boom in the near future: 338 radio stations are expected to be launched in 91 cities across the country. Naturally, this will translate into a robust job market.
In Tune into radio, earn up to 70 K, we covered the hot job profiles of producers, music managers and scriptwriters associated with the radio industry.
Here, we tell all you potential aspirants how to be a winner and let your radio show stand out from amongst the rest.
With most radio stations playing the same music -- popular Bollywood songs -- the RJ will be the appealing and drawing factor. "In other words, radio jockeys build the identity of any radio station," says Anish Trivedi, CMD, Banyan Tree Communications and former RJ with Radio Mid-Day and GO 92.5 FM.
Your voice is the key
There's no denying that. But RJing is not solely about a great voice.
"You don't need to have a heavy baritone. Yes, a good voice is certainly an added advantage, but not a pre-requisite," says Hrishikesh Kannan aka RJ Hrishi K.
"What's essential is that you use the microphone effectively to project your voice. In that sense, your voice should be microphone-friendly," elaborates television and radio anchor Roshan Abbas, who is also the dean of the Encompass Institute of Radio Management.
Voice modulation is a must. Speaking in the same monotone is a strict no-no. If you are efficient at mimicry, that is certainly an added advantage.
Unlike television, radio is not about visual impact but about sound. So an RJ must not only effectively converse, he must knows what sounds good on the microphone and what doesn't.
Learn to communicate
It's not about just playing a few songs. Effective communication skills are essential. "It is the way a station fills in the silence between the music, that goes a long way in building its identity," says Trivedi.
An RJ needs to be fluent in the language he is going to speak in, which in today's times, means an effortless control over both Hindi and English.
Learn to communicate with others since you will be interacting real-time with a large number of people. According to Abbas, those who do well in debates, elocutions and dramatics while at school and college tend to be good at communicating with others.
He adds, "Being an extrovert is an advantage. But then, you never know. There are exceptions who are shy in real life, but find their own identity behind the microphone."
Be yourself
Most RJs do not use a bound script, anymore. The reason being that a few pointers instead of a full-fledged script allow you to sound more natural.
"The script tends to become a wall between the RJ and his listeners. It's all about maintaining a balance. Be relaxed, not laidback Be informal to the right degree. Be pleasant but don't end up sounding fake," advises radio doyen Ameen Sayani.
Adds Divya, former RJ at Win 94.6 and 93.5 Red FM and now an RJ at Aawaz, a Dubai [ Images ] radio station, "You have to enjoy each and every thing you do as an RJ. Only then will the listener have a good time."
"Remember," she adds, "through the medium of sound, you must convey all the other senses to the listener. A good radio programme is one that you can see. A listener must be able to smell the fragrance, see all the hues and feel that he can reach out and touch. That will happen only when you connect with the listener, and for that, you have to be yourself."
Which means, you cannot afford to get stressed out and flabbergasted. As an RJ you may face innumerable irritating callers, mishaps and faux pas. Keep your cool and have the presence of mind to get out of such situations. Learn to take it in your stride.
Most important, do not keep brooding or over the mistake you have made. You cannot afford to lose your faculty of speech because dead air (when there is no sound) kills.
Social relevance?
"There was this RJ who thought that he connected best with his audience on the day he told them his dog died and how sad he was feeling, et al. I would say that is rubbish," says Anish Trivedi. "Your listener has problems of his own, he is not tuning in to listen to yours. He wants to be entertained."
At the same time, the entertainment must have a dash of social relevance. "Underneath the sugarcoating, there must be a strong undercurrent of social relevance in what you say. Avoid being frivolous," says Sayani.
"An RJ controls a listenership that may be as high as 10,000 people. Responsibility is the key. I have even encountered suicide callers on air. A responsible RJ can even change lives," adds Abbas.
Create a portfolio
The key to losing your inhibitions is practice. Practise in front of your friends and family. Record your voice and take someone else's opinion as to how it sounds. Once you are ready, either wait for a radio station to announce its regular RJ hunt, or drop in your CD at various radio stations.
Abbas explains, "The CD must have four different sets of recordings -- a normal announcer's voice, how one reads the news. Then record in your own personal style. Then, if you can, try a few variations."
The recordings must always be short pieces in which you, as an RJ, introduce a song, among other things that you may talk. This conversation that an RJ exercises between two songs is called a link. An effective link is crisp, and lasts approximately for a minute.
The amount an RJ is paid depends on the station. On an average though, it would start at an approximate value of Rs 15,000 and once an RJ becomes established and popular, his remuneration may go as high as Rs 1,00,000 per month.
